How to Better Insulate Your Garage

Poor insulation in the garage can lead to uneven heating and higher electricity bills. Whether you want to make your garage a more comfortable space to work in or you want to avoid uneven heating in the house, garage insulation is the best solution for you.

If you find your garage insulation lacking, here are some of the best types of insulation that you can use:

1. Garage door insulation

While you’re looking for garage door installation in Salt Lake City, you should also look for insulation kits that you can use for your garage door. It won’t make sense to insulate your walls and ceiling if you don’t insulate your garage door since this is where most of the cold or warm air goes through. To insulate a garage door without a kit, install rigid foam insulation on the whole thing and seal the gaps with weather seal strip.

2. Fiberglass insulation

This type of insulation is the most common one used for garages. You can find fiberglass insulation in pre-cut batts or rolls at the store. When installing fiberglass installation, the batts or rolls need to be cut in the perfect size and shape to fit on your walls and ceilings. Since it’s a relatively inexpensive option for insulation, fiberglass is used by many homeowners that want to slow down the movement of heat and cold in the garage. The material of fiberglass, which is made up of very fine glass fibers, makes it easier to stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

3. Spray foam insulation

Spray foam insulation is the best option if you want to convert your garage into a living space or a workspace. This type of insulation is applied to the open cavities of garage walls and ceilings, which will create an air seal. Although it is a more expensive type of insulation, spray foam is excellent at resisting heat flow.

4. Cellulose insulation

Cellulose insulation is mainly made from recycled newspapers that have been treated for fire-resistance. In this type of insulation, cellulose is blown into the garage walls and ceiling cavities using a blowing machine that aerates the material during application. However, it works best with finished garages with walls and ceilings covered by drywall. Cellulose insulation is a very cheap type of insulation which you can DIY by renting a blowing machine. But if you lack the experience, you can hire a professional insulator to do it for you.

5. Rigid foam insulation

Rigid foam usually has a higher R-value per inch than other types of insulation, such as fiberglass and cellulose. Rigid foam comes in sheets with a 4 x 8-foot size and 1/2 to 4-inch thickness. You can choose from the following rigid foam types: expanded polystyrene, extruded polystyrene, and polyisocyanurate. Just like spray foam insulation, rigid foam is a great option if you want to convert your garage into a living space. However, you need to check if the rigid foam you’re buying is fire-resistant and suitable for use in the garage.

Uninsulated garages can cause higher electricity bills and even damage your car if the temperatures are freezing. To avoid these unnecessary expenses, it’s recommended that you insulate your garage as soon as possible.
